The boys, a friend of Welding Boy, and I enjoyed an adventure to the Wizarding Festival in Scottsville today. It’s an adorable little town. Straight out of 1700 something. It appears not much has changed in the last couple centuries there. There is a feeling that you are almost experiencing history walking in the streets.
I didn’t know what to expect ahead of time. The main street was blocked off, and people were milling around. We quickly found some friends we’d planned to meet there. Glitter tattoos were already in session with their kids. Then we were off to have a spooky picture taken with a holographic portrait. One of those that changes from the beautiful woman to a scary zombie. We quickly found “butterbeer” and “dragon’s blood” to drink. They even had chocolate frogs! All of the shops get into the festivities. Community members dress up. Specialized menus are thought up and customized to the theme. It’s a fun little escape from everyday life.
The shop serving the drinks was an all organic, fermented foods, shop. They take health food to a whole new level. Several of their herb blends took be back several years to Butterfly Herbs in my home town. The feel and the smell reminded me of all the “hippies” I grew up around.
After the festival fun we headed home. Welding Boy and his friend ran around the property for a while, then watched Zoolander. I overheard them laughing at all the right parts. It’s excellent to see the two of them hang out. It’s been a while since Welding Boy had friends to really just be himself with. With everything that has happened in his life he doesn’t believe he is likable. He believes he’s weird. The reality is that he is a sweet, kind, caring soul. He kept me going even when everything fell apart. It’s sickening to watch him tear himself into tiny little pieces in hopes that the wind will carry him away. He’s had a rough patch of healing. I can’t even begin to tell you how dark his progress has been. Lately it seems his healing process is starting to become just a touch lighter. I’m hoping this trend continues.
In the evening we went to a haunting event. It was set up in a quaint historical village area. They had people in costumes, acting like the characters they were assigned. Being that my kids and I are zombie fanatics, we had a great time laughing and playing along with the show. Our friends we went with have younger kids. Their youngest was scared from time to time, but their oldest girl seemed to be enjoying herself. It was fantastic to feel “normal” again. I don’t remember a recent time where I felt more like my old self.
We really haven’t made many friends out here in the last year. East coast people are far more guarded and closed off than west coast people. This is a smaller community, where we came from a population saturated area. The differences are outstanding. Even with being the weird “Californians” we have managed to find a few friends. At this point they’ve been adopted as family. They’re amazing people. I owe them mountains of gratitude for helping make anything in my life feel close to “normal” again.
