Once again we have arrived at my absolutely favorite holiday.  Once again we solemnly swear we are up to no good… at least with our tricks.

As usual we’ve been planning make up and costumes for weeks.  We have every tiny detail worked out. With funding being tighter than usual around here, we challenged everyone to come up with costumes or make up that would total $8 each.  Blue Girl was the only one to use her budget; she made excellent use of it in fact.  So very proud of everybody thinking outside the box, getting creative, supporting each other, and making it happen.  So as it stands this morning we’re going to have: a master welder , Wednesday Adams, and an Indiana Jones.

Broken Girl has been struggling on how she may be able to participate in Halloween.  She has always loved trick or treating with the kids, but this year she can’t take the risk on navigating uneven streets and darkness with her crutches.  She loves to dress up, but with the giant brace she can’t do too much.  We’ve been wracking our brains trying to figure it out.

A couple weeks ago her dressings were removed.  She has an amazing scar that is healing nicely.  I joked with her that we should “cut it open” one night when she was complaining of how itchy it was.  An idea was born.

We went to the drawing board.  I would use my latex/creepy make up skills to make it look like the scar had burst open.  Blue Girl thought there should be some “pockets” of fake blood to make it more realistic.  The boys thought it should look like there was some infection; root issue causing the skin to rupture.  Broken Girl wanted to disguise the edges of the latex with bruising, and came up with a conceivable story.  She then went to the head trainer to get her in on it.  She only told her she was going to trick her trainer, to have towels ready and “go with it when it happens”.  The stage was set.

As Broken Girl went into the training room she told her trainer how much pain she had.  That she had fallen in the night.  As her trainer unraveled the bandaging the fake blood I’d made was really sticky.  She went to get gloves, then continued.  At one point asking my daughter if she was ok or felt like passing out.  Her skin appeared to be peeling back at this point.  Finally the bandage was off, and the plan was to clean it up and send pictures to the surgeon.  See what he would recommend.  By this point there is quite a crowd checking out the wound.  Her trainer goes to swipe the first disinfectant swab and Broken Girl says:  HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Her trainer was awesome, as we knew she would be.  She was so relieved, still wanting to know if everything was in tact, and was already finding the humor in it.  Eventually everybody got a good laugh.  The trainer, in turn, tricked the head coach with pictures of the disastrous wound.  Eventually letting him off the hook.

This year we aren’t buying costumes, we didn’t carve pumpkins for the first time in my life, but you know what?  We are going to have fun today!  Nobody can get in our way, nobody can suck the fun out of it because it’s our family day.  It’s funny for such a silly holiday how much it means to our family, and how much fun others around us seem to have.

Now that the trick is out of the way, we look forward to the treats!
